People have a range of options from "Conflict Avoidance" to "Violence" to resolve disputes.

- The left is more win-win, while right is win-lose.
- Mediator does not have authority to make or impose a decision on those involved.
- Towards the right end of the spectrum, there will be more coercion from external party to force opposing party. Nonviolently or violently into submission.

- Mediators are "outside" of the context of the disputes. No stakes in the disputes. Impartial. No authority over the parties. (Page 24)

- non-violence - civil disobedience demonstration, fasting, boycott, making the situation difficult for the other party to force a concession.
