The **Global Industry Classification Standard** (**GICS**) is an [industry taxonomy](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Industry_taxonomy "Industry taxonomy") developed in 1999 by [MSCI](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MSCI "MSCI") and [Standard & Poor's](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_%26_Poor%27s "Standard & Poor's") (S&P) for use by the global financial community.
