# Went to Hong Kong for the first time on 2-6 Nov 2023.
I love the food. People are friendly. But the cost of living is quite high.
A local friend told me that rental is high.
# Since Covid-19. What changed?
Since the outbreak of COVID-19, a considerable number of expats have left Hong Kong and have not returned, particularly the young and capable who have opted to migrate to other countries. Hong Kong's distinctiveness lies in its democratic system, financial hub status, and access to the mainland. However, the democratic system has been eroded, and Hong Kong is losing ground as a financial hub in comparison to other cities. On top of that, businesses can now set up shop directly on the mainland due to easier and cheaper access. Unfortunately, there isn't much left that makes Hong Kong unique or special these days.
# What made up a society like Hong Kong?
It's true that the value of a society is largely shaped by its people, and any changes in the population can lead to changes in society itself. The individual values, beliefs, and behaviours of people can shape the collective culture and outlook of a community. Therefore, it's essential to understand and appreciate the diversity and uniqueness of each individual and the value they bring to society.
# Relavant for Singapore
Similarly, Singapore is made up of its people. If it loses its edge and differentiation factor and stops being "special", it will lose its status.
What's so special about Hong Kong?
