- Mechanistic View of life.
- Rene Descartes - Cartesian view - split the human experience into "mind and body"
- Reductionist view - everything can be reduced, and view from a mechanical perspective
- Discovery in Chemistry, - oxygen. Cells theory
- But cells are living systems -- cannot be understood in a reductionist framework
- Newton thought that "everything has been designed completely", "as in", but Darwin shows that everything is "becoming", evolving instead.
- Reductionist -- Reduced until to the level of gene --- that leading to Genetic determinism -- forced mechanistic medicine.
- Biomedical model - This limit itself to the study of "biological medicine", cellular biological -process in injury - but what about non-biological circumstances influence?
- Becareful, are we focusing too much on (a) diseases processes -- the biological, physiological mechanism thought which disease manifest and progresses (b) or Disease origin - the root causes, or the condition that give rise to the disease in the first place.
- We focus on too much (reactive), not preventive.
- Modern medicine going "smaller", losing sight of human being.
- However in 1970s, 80s -- swing back to "holistic medicine"
