#Design_Thinking #creativity #logical #book # Lateral thinking by Edward De Bono. - It is a way of thinking, a process to get "unstuck" from Vertical Thinking. - Our mind is pattern recognition, and we often are stuck in a rut, caught up with clinche thinking. - A way of thinking to increase creativity and insight generation. 1. Generate Quota of ideas 1. Idea is to give a quota, to generate ideas as many as possible in the beginning. 2. Do not accept the first idea immediately. 2. Generate alternative assumptions 1. Question assumptions, 2. Use the "Why" techniques - asked Why.. to drill down to assumptions 3. Generate alternative explanations to events/observations 1. Exercise: From news article, to generate Problems statements, for different age/sex, and come out with solutions for those problems. Generate new narrative and explanations from different perspectives. 4. Problems have a "self impose" boundaries, and when someone come out with a solution, we may think they "cheated" but no one said it cannot be solved by that manner. So question those boundaries. 3. Suspend Judgement 1. It is about saving ideas. Ideas generate ideas. 1. A wrong idea may lead to another idea that lead to the right idea. Don't kill it prematurely. 2. Exploration stage. 3. Buckets may have holes, but we want to see how far it can carry the water. 4. Designs 1. When generating designs. Look at the idea, and way of thinking, effects behind it 2. The mechanics or engineering may not work, but it is about the idea and assumptions behind it. 1. Instead of hand picking apples, why not let apple drop down by itself? 5. Use "PO" 1. A new word, instead of Yes or No to an idea, use PO.. to signal that it's for consideration, and for exploration. This will be useful for [[HOPES Project Index]] project, to question assumptions about design and problems.
